Calathea Care: How to Prevent Brown Leaf Tips

Calatheas are famed for their striking foliage and dramatic movements, but they are also notorious for developing crispy brown leaf tips. This common issue is usually a sign of distress, often related to their environmental conditions. Here is how to diagnose and prevent brown tips on your Calathea.

1. Water Quality Issues

Calatheas are highly sensitive to minerals found in tap water, such as chlorine, fluoride, and salts. These accumulate in the leaf tips, causing them to burn.

  • Solution: Use distilled, rainwater, or filtered water instead of direct tap water.

2. Low Humidity

As tropical understory plants, Calatheas thrive in high humidity (above 50%). Dry air makes the leaf margins dry out and turn brown.

  • Solution: Group plants together, use a humidifier, or place them on a pebble tray filled with water.

3. Inconsistent Soil Moisture

Calatheas like their soil to remain consistently moist but not soggy. Allowing the soil to dry out completely will cause immediate tip damage.

  • Solution: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and ensure the pot has excellent drainage.
